LVNBA members came together with our joint venture partner, the State Bar of Nevada, and other members of the legal community in Las Vegas on February 24, 2012 at the Bistro at the Culinary Academy to celebrate the publication of the February 2012 Black History Month issue of the Nevada Lawyer magazine.

The issue celebrates the contributions of African-American lawyers in Nevada against the backdrop of the civil rights movement on a state level and a national level. This historic issue celebrates successes and achievements while also aknowledging wrongs and injustices with which our society is still coming to grips.

The event was attended by approximately 80 judges, lawyers, elected officials. Several people made remarks including Chief Justice Nancy Saitta, Justice Michael Douglas (LVNBA Past President 1987-1989), LVNBA President Doreen Spears Hartwell, State Bar of Nevada President Constance Akridge, and the co-chairs of the steering committee for the Black History Month issue LVNBA Vice President Professor Rachel Anderson and past President of the State Bar of Nevada and LVNBA Member Kathleen England.

Senator Harry Reid sent his representative Ida Gaines to present the Las Vegas Chapter of the National Bar Association and Foundation a Certificate of Commendation in honor and commemoration of the Nevada Lawyer magazine’s Black History Month issue.

Congresswoman Shelley Berkeley was able to attend in person and recognized the Nevada Lawyer magazine with the Las Vegas Chapter of the National Bar Association and the State Bar of Nevada on the occasion of the celebration of the 2012 Black History Month issue.
